Tidbits, Book Orders, Plans

What a joy it was to see you last night for our discussion The Romance of Orthodoxy.  Great company, hearty laughter, a superlative chapter, gracious hosts (Finnbar’s), and all around, a rollicking good time.

By popular demand, here is a link to a set of study questions – which might give us, in advance, some thoughtful discussion parameters for March.

A few of last nights’ tangents, for the gkc-11.jpgforgetful, curious, or vicarious absentees out there:

~ Upcoming Agenda ~

Alas, we are closing in on the end of GK’s swashbuckling apologia… only one more chapter remains for our journey through Orthodoxy, Authority and the Adventurer, on tap for March 7th.  (Does anyone else have the habit of slowing down while reading a really good book because you don’t want it to end? – That’s kind of how I feel about Orthodoxy and our monthly ACS meetings).

As previously noted, to usher in the optimism of Spring, our April gathering offers an opportunity to share some shorter, lighter Chesterton fare:

  • a poem,
  • top-10 quotes,
  • Gilbert Magazine essay,
  • anything else that can be shared with the group in hard-copy (no longer than 1 page).

This transition month will also give us a chance to meditate on the last thoughts on  Orthodoxy and prepare for a dramatic change in genre to that of our May selectionThe Man Who Was Thursday: a Nightmare (sometimes referred to as a metaphysical thriller).

We reasoned that it might book-review-the-man-who-was-thursdaybehoove us to cordon off conversation of TMWWT to the novel in its entirety, rather than risk spoilers or tamper with individuals’ personal reading speeds, arbitrarily break up discussion into two halves, etc.

So – between now and then, there’s plenty of time to get your hands on the book and read it at your own pace.

I will be placing an order for TMWWT from the American Chesterton Society.  Many of you, like me, prefer to have a hard copy, and I like to support Dale Ahlquist and the folks at the national Chesterton hub.

Members of the American Chesterton Society receive 20% off all merchandise from the ACS store (books, apparel, gifts), as well as the outstanding Gilbert Magazine (6 issues per year).  Join for one year for $42, three year membership for a bargain at $105.

~ Speaking of American Chesterton Society membership! ~

ACS Membership also – for the first time – provides you with a $20 discount on registration for the annual conference of the American Chesterton Society.  Just this week, the line-up of presenters and topics was announced for this summer’s event, which will be held in our own back yard at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, August 1st-3rd.Shakespeare!  Hobbits!  Wendel Berry!  Peter Kreeft!  Check here for the full slate, sure to be a rip-roaring good time.  Dorms are available – Cathy, can you rough it for two nights?  It would be fun if the Albany Chesterton Society filled up an entire floor – GKC summer camp!

Cheers,

Albany Chesterton Society
